Pre-Law Summer Institute’s 50th Anniversary Conference and Dinner

The American Indian Law Center, Inc. (“AILC”) is excited to announce the 50th Anniversary of the Pre-Law Summer Institute for American Indians and Alaska Natives (“PLSI”) to be held on September 28-29, 2017 at the Isleta Resort and Casino, 1100 Broadway Blvd SE, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87105. Our celebration will include a Kick-Off Mixer on Thursday, September 28, 2017, and an all-day CLE program (6.5 CLE credits), evening reception, silent auction, and banquet on Friday, September 29, 2017.

The PLSI program started in 1967 with the mission of increasing the number of American Indian and Alaska Native law students and the number of Native American lawyers. Since then, over 1,200 Native Americans have gone through PLSI, many of whom have gone to law school with a law school graduation success rate of approximately 90%.

The PLSI began as a component of the Special Scholarship Program in Law for American Indians and Alaska Natives, which most people simply called “the Summer Program.” It has since increased its capacity to assist Native American students with the law school careers in multiple ways including sponsoring student participation in the ABA Judicial Clerkship Program which was implemented to increase the number of minority judicial law clerks, and assistance with bar exam preparation courses, and soon to include assistance with textbooks. PLSI students have gone on to work in all levels of tribal, state, and federal governments as well as private practice and industry.

Our CLE program will look back on the past 50 years to reflect on the evolution of Indian law, tribal courts, the trust responsibility, and will highlight the accomplishments of 50 years of our alumni. We also plan to honor the past and present leadership of the AILC and PLSI at the dinner program. This event is the grand celebration of the AILC flagship program that has provided the initial legal educational experience to Indian people who have gone on to make significant contributions that have changed the course of federal Indian law and U.S. Indian policy in many different respects. The CLE agenda is available here: https://www.ailc-inc.org/registration/wp-content/uploads/cle-agenda.pdf

We hope that you will join us for this event to commemorate the PLSI, which has contributed so much to the success of Native American law students in this country. In addition, there are sponsorship opportunities for entities or individuals to donate funds to further the efforts of PLSI.
